‘Myth’ Me? Not So Much! Some Important Truths About Dieting… http://tedguicefitness.com/myth-me-not-so-much-some-important-truths-about-dieting/ http://tedguicefitness.com/myth-me-not-so-much-some-important-truths-about-dieting/#comments Sun, 18 Mar 2012 22:37:58 +0000 Ted http://tedguicefitness.com/?p=586 There is a lot of information coming at us regarding a word I loathe, ‘dieting’, and it comes from a plethora of sources via the web, our phones, TV, printed media, ad nauseam! My goal in this post is to dispel some myths that have been circulating, some for eons it seems, and to give you the facts about the why/what/how/when’s of nutrition and exercise.

Let’s get started!

Myth #1. You’ll get fat by eating too late or just before bed time!

The Truth: While you may be setting yourself up for a good dose of heartburn by eating that slice of pizza just before retiring, there is no proof that you will gain fat by doing so. Your body is an amazing machine and is intelligent enough to know that it is not in it’s best interest to go into ‘fat producing’ mode because you ate the rest of that burrito before nodding off. It just doesn’t work that way, folks! Your body looks at the big picture of what it is fed and is a genius at balancing and self regulation.

Myth #2. Carbs are BAD!

The Truth: No. Carbs are not bad. Let’s all say it together. “CARBS ARE NOT BAD!” There now. Don’t you feel better already?

We need carbohydrates as a primary source of fuel. The more complex (less refined) carbs we ingest, the better. Think whole or less-processed grains, nuts, legumes, fruits and vegetables, and then eat them to fuel your workouts, your body and your entire day properly and optimally! As with anything else in life, too much of anything will not serve you well. You can apply the same standard in reverse. Too little is just that…too little! Find your proper balance and feed your body properly every day and at every meal.

Myth #3. This diet is the BEST EVER!

The Truth: No. No it is not. Diets don’t work! Just look around you, perhaps even at yourself, and observe the number of friends, family members and work associates who have initially lost weight on their new diet…only to put it all back on again!

That latest diet craze that promises you’ll lose thirty pounds in thirty days most likely includes a big helping of caffeine or some other kind of stimulant. It also requires that you drastically reduce the amount of calories you take in. That’s called starvation. And that’s not good!

Use your common sense. Your body requires proper and consistent nutrition to function at its best. Starving your body by dieting sends a signal to actually reserve any and all fat, protein and carbs it can upon your next meal, sending itself into survival mode. When your body is in survival mode, it retains everything it can from any source you feed it, for fear that it won’t be fed again, and this eventually changes your body’s thermostat to a new mode.

Now, hang in there with me! Once you have lost that thirty pounds and have reset your body’s thermostat, ready to end your dieting, satisfied with your weight loss, your body remembers! You go back to eating in a more balanced, less restricted way, because you have reached your weight loss goal. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, your body thermostat is still set on survival mode.

So what happens now that you are eating normally again? Your body stores everything, because it is still in survival mode from being starved, and you may very well gain every pound back that you lost and then some!

My point with this post is to simply remind you of a few things you almost certainly already know:

  1. Diets don’t work. Feed and nurture your body with proper nutrition every day. 5 smaller, well balanced meals a day is best!
  2. Exercise more! No matter what type you engage in, exercise for at least 30 minutes every day.
  3. Use your common sense when it comes to nutrition and exercise. Moderation is key. Balance the goal!
  4. Your body needs protein, carbohydrates and FAT! Yes…you need to feed yourself the right amounts of each every day.

Let me just say this about that: WRONG!

I hate to sound harsh, but skipping meals is one of the most efficient ways to sabotage your weight loss program. Pair this method of reducing calories with an exercise routine that is inefficient (or perhaps even non-existent) and you are bound to be disappointed in the results that you see and feel. Let me explain why.

At first glance, missing a meal or two throughout the day does make sense if you want to merely reduce your calorie count. Less food = fewer calories. Can’t argue with the facts on that one! And, in the short-term anyway, you probably will lose a few pounds…perhaps quite a few even. Now I will explain why in the longer term, it can have the opposite—sometimes dangerous—results!

One of the most important reasons to NOT skip meals is that your body goes into a sort of Starvation Panic. After several hours, or longer, of depriving your body of the consistent nutrition it requires to stay balanced and healthy, your body will actually store fat and calories to use later. It is afraid that you will starve it again! When your body is in this starvation mode state, over time you will actually gain the weight that you intended to lose. Another crucial component in losing those extra pounds happens to be the fluctuation of your insulin levels. You can get more information about this in the article below. It’s excellent information, and especially important for women!

Welcome To My Blog! In the coming weeks and months, I’ll be posting about all things health and fitness from beautiful Palm Springs, California.

In this first post, I’ll share the goals and desires which led me to create this blog and give you an idea of the exercise, fitness, diet and health topics that I hope to cover in the future. I hope that you will find the subject matter timely, useful and practical in reaching your own unique fitness goals.

There is so much involved in talking about our physical selves. My desire is to start a conversation that will in some way benefit, enlighten, inform and assist you in living a happy, healthy and longer life—and doing so in a body you feel great about!

Just as I am a work in progress, this blog will certainly change and evolve! Not only will I strive to impart knowledge and ideas to help keep you in shape, but I also look forward to hearing your own thoughts. Your feedback is always welcome here!

I encourage you to ask questions about what I write and to make suggestions for future posts. Ask me about all the things that will help you in your quest to feel good in your skin, both physically and emotionally. I hope to learn more about you, just as you learn more about me!
